Just what you DONT want in refrigerator repair. When my refrigerator wouldn't start, they did the obvious quick (15 min) repair, without following standard procedure of checking the whole system. They replaced the start mechanism, and used a part not recommended for my amana refrigerator. When the same problem occurred 10 days later, rather than checking out other possible reasons, or even checking the compressor windings, Tom, said the compressor was gone and wrote up a ticket for an $800 compressor replacement. Online research showed they put in a non recommended part, and revealed what SHOULD have occurred:
Refrigerator does not run but the light works
Check the temperature setting
Make certain there is a three inch space outside of the refrigerator between the walls and the back and sides and at least a one inch gap above, to allow for air flow
Clean the condensor coils
Unplug the refrigerator, wait two hours and plug it in. If you hear it running, a problem is causing the compressor to overheat
Test the temperature control
Test the evaporator fan
Test the defrost timer
Test the compressor relay
Test the overload protector
Test the compressor motor
When I called the owner, to discuss the situation, he basically said, since you are such an expert, why dont you repair it yourself! And offered a ridiculous discount on their $800. compressor repair. Believe the problem is in the defrost mechanism, and since they didnt arrive for 24 hours after initial problem, the fully defrosted frige worked initially. GET A REAL REPAIRMAN NOT A PARTS JOCKEY!(that was the online repairman's comment re:how my problem was handled)
